About Us

Every human being deserves an opportunity to learn and fulfill their full potential. Lack of resources and opportunities should not be barriers to success and happiness.

Our Mission

The Palan Foundation is an independent charitable organisation established in 2013 by Nitin and Kamu Palan who serve as its trustees. The inspiration behind the philanthropic mission is the family’s success in establishing one of UK’s foremost sightseeing company, Golden Tours in 1984.

The Foundation’s goal is to promote social justice and combat poverty through the magic of education. By investing in people and local communities, we can break down the barriers of inequality and inspire people with life changing opportunities.
Educational nurturing with better understanding of one’s heritage and interfaith/human values helps to build the magic triangle, our symbol of hope. The Foundation has contributed to numerous charitable projects offering financial assistance, specialist consultancy and mentoring and works with various partners who share the same vision.

The Foundation is currently working on projects in the United Kingdom and India.

“Let us be courageous and build our future security through a commitment of support to our younger generations for the greater good of us all”

Working with partners who share our vision will help us to make great strides in fulfilling our common goals.

Nitin Palan’s family emigrated to the UK during the Ugandan mass exodus of 1972 when President Idi Amin threw out more than 70,000 Asians confiscating all their belongings. This was the start of a journey of learning life skills, a hard work ethic and breaking down barriers in adversity.

Faith in a higher being helps in building one’s own faith through the social and economic hardship of life according to Nitin Palan.

Studying hard and a clear focus led him to qualify as a chartered accountant after coming to the UK from Uganda. After several job business attempts, Nitin found his entrepreneurship calling when he ventured into the tourism business.

He, with his wife Kamu founded the Golden Tours company in 1984. Within a decade it became one of Britain’s well-known tourist brands offering a wide range of tours across the country’s iconic landmarks. As the reputation grew, the company partnered with major names like internationally renowned Gray Line Association and Warner Bros. Studio Tour London. The company currently has a workforce of over 200 staff in the UK and India and has carried more than 10 million passengers.
Although Golden Tours was the underpinning of Nitin’s vision, he always has had a close heartfelt affinity toward his faith and service (seva). Like his own journey, Nitin knew that for people to succeed they needed educational opportunities and an understanding of their own background (heritage) and of others through interfaith relations.

It is the trilogy of education, heritage and inter faith relations that inspired him to establish the Palan Foundation in 2013. As a highly successful businessman, he now devotes substantial amount of his time and his own funds to support good causes. The Foundation has given away over £4 million in good causes. It has further provided free consultancy and resources to community organisations. For his considerable efforts, Nitin was awarded the MBE in 2017.

Some of Nitin’s pioneering projects include the founding of annual Diwali in London in 2001. The event attracts over 35,000 at Trafalgar Square and has led to other Diwali events including at Downing Street and the European Parliament which the Palan Foundation has also supported with expertise and resources.

Nitin has served as a Trustee at one of Britain’s iconic faith landmarks, the BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir (Neasden Temple) in London from 2003 – 20XX. He was appointed a Trustee of BAPS Charities in 20XX which provide social and humanitarian assistance to the local communities surrounding the mandir as well as other national projects.

To improve religious and heritage literacy amongst different communities, Nitin has supported numerous faith and interfaith projects. The Foundation works closely with well-known organisations like the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies in providing scholarships and teaching opportunities. It further manages web portals including Hindu Matters in Britain and India1914 to commemorate the contribution of Indian soldiers during WW1. In partnership with the British Legion, the Foundation launched the Khaddy Poppy in 2018.
In India, there is major drive to offer opportunities to the poorest of the poor by providing resources in schools and inspiring children to learn, and especially girls to encourage equality.

Nitin served as a Trustee for the Inter Faith Network of the UK from 2009-2019 and for the Hindu Christian Forum from 2013–2015. He was appointed a patron of the Religious Education Council in 2019 and the Hindu Forum of Europe in 20XX.
